History[edit | edit source]
A mix of Romance, German, and Slavic (likely Slovenian and Czech) language speakers have populated the area, contributing to the diversity of surnames. Miners from Tyrol, Vorarlberg, and Bohemia settled in the Vanoi Valley. Cultural exchange is evident in a 16th-century fresco in Caoria depicting Prague Castle and the patronage of Saint John of Nepomuk (a patron saint of Bohemia).
Jurisdictions:
- Mid-6th Century: The Vanoi Valley was linked to Feltre.
- 1373: The valley came under Tyrolean control.
- 1401: The Duke of Austria granted jurisdiction to Giorgio di Welsperg. The Welsperg family ruled for over four centuries, fostering economic and demographic growth through mining.
- 1809-1815: Briefly annexed to the Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy. The area participated in the anti-French insurrection led by Andreas Hofer.
- 1815: Returned to Austrian rule as part of the County of Tyrol.
- 1918: Became part of Italy after World War I.
Major events:
- Numerous floods have impacted the Vanoi Valley.
- 1823: A landslide on the Rio Rebrùt created a small, temporary lake.
- 1825: A larger landslide dammed the Vanoi, forming "Lago Nuovo."
- 1826: "Lago Nuovo" breached, destroying Ponte and Remesori and killing 52 people.
- 1882: "Lago Nuovo" disappeared completely after repeated floods weakened its natural dam.
- 1966: A major flood significantly altered the valley, leading to emigration and a decline in agriculture.[1]
