County Information

Description

Butte County was created 10 Jan 1851[2] and was named for the Sutter Buttes in neighboring Sutter County; butte means "small knoll" or "small hill" in French. Its county seat is Oroville. It is located in the north-central area of the state[3]

California county clerks were to keep voting registers every other year from 1866 and well into the 20th century. These large books, called Great Registers, listed the men who registered to vote in that county.
