History[edit | edit source]
Mormon Pioneers explored the area in 1850 went back to Salt Lake to winter then brought back a small group of settlers in 1851. The settlers built a row of log homes know as "Davis Fort". More settlers were sent to populate the area in 1853 including a two large groups of Scandinavian immigrants.[2] In 1855, Box Elder was the first name given to the small settlement, then later the town's name was changed to Brigham City in honor of Brigham Young.
Brigham City was incorporated on 10 February 1867. Early city fathers planted fruit and shade trees making this the "fruit way" between Brigham City and Willard. Now colorful roadside fruit stands grace Highway 89 with buyers that travel far to purchase the best fruit in the west.[3]
Brigham City was home to the Intermountain Indian School [4] from 1949 to 1984.
