The present municipality has the same territory as the one instituted in 1863, when the municipal system was implemented in Sweden. Between 1974 and 1983 it became a part of Vännäs Municipality. The split in 1983 made Bjurholm the least populated of all Swedish municipalities.

(2) Bjurholm parish was formed in 1808 by transferring part of Nordmaling parish to the new parish.

Bjurholm parish together with Nordmaling parish formed a joint pastorate 1808-1815. In 1815 the parish constituted its own pastorate.

At the time of the establishment of the parish, Aborrfors, Agneström, Balfors, Balsjö, Bjurholm, Brännland, Högland, Högås, Kyrktjärn, Lillarmsjö, Mariebäck, Nordanås, Nyby, Näsland, Näsmark, Ottervattnet, Stenvattnet, Strömåker, Vitvattnet, Vännrest, Vännrest, Väännäs, Väännäs belonged.

Until 1858, the parish was divided into three districts; Nordmalings and Bjurholms tingslag, Lycksele tingslag and Åsele tingslag. Since the Lapland freedoms ended in 1858, the parish belonged to Nordmaling's and Bjurholm's districts.

By decision of 1865, Balsjö, Bredträsk, Halvpundsjö, Övre Nyland, Ström, Stennäs, Sörholmsjö, Västra Strömåker, Västerås, Öreström and Malmby were incorporated into Bjurholm's parish, which were previously considered to belong to Lapland. Some of these villages had already been entered in Bjurholm's church books.

By decisions of 1858 and 1868, the homestead Sandsjönäs 1 was transferred from Lycksele parish to Bjurholm parish. Due to enjoyed Lapland freedom, which ceased in 1873, the homestead in Lycksele remained for some time thereafter.

From 1920, an area of ​​the homestead Norrfors was transferred from Bjurholm parish to Nordmaling parish.

From 1944, the land register units Grönnäs, Häggnäs, Långvattnet, Norrfors, Söråker, Vackerås, Viängnet or Ånäset were transferred, and Överläggda from Bjurholms to Nordmalings parish.
