Beginner: Wales 1837 to the present - Civil Registration Births

Several versions of indexes to civil registration birth records for Wales are available online. Common Welsh names may complicate your search. The following steps work in a best case scenario.

Step 1. Go to the General Register Office website

A. If this is your first time at this website you will need to "register as an individual"

B. Once you are registered Login

C. Select to search the "Birth" index

D. Fill in details on the search page (you may need to try exact matches and variations)

Surname

First Forename

Gender

Year [include +/- 2 years]

Mother's Maiden Surname

District of Birth (try searching without this unless it is a very common name)

E. Click the "Search" button


Step 2. Review the list of possible matches

If there is only one close match click the "Order" button
