Units 1st through 5th[edit | edit source]

  • 1st Regiment, Alabama Cavalry
    1st Cavalry Regiment was assembled in November, 1861, at Montgomery, Alabama. Its companies were raised in the counties of Montgomery, Morgan, Dale, Tallapoosa, Calhoun, Pike, Autauga, Monroe, Butler, and Mobile
  • 2nd Regiment, Alabama Cavalry
    2nd Cavalry Regiment was organized during May, 1862, at Montgomery, Alabama. Its companies were from the counties of Calhoun, Shelby, Greene, Montgomery, Tuscaloosa, Butler, Coosa, Monroe, and Dallas.
  • 3rd Regiment, Alabama Cavalry
    3rd Cavalry Regiment was formed at Tupelo, Mississippi, in June, 1862. These companies were from Monroe, Choctaw, Wilcox, Mobile, Perry, Dallas, Calhoun, and Autauga counties.
  • 4th Regiment, Alabama Cavalry (Roddy's)
    4th(Roddey's) Cavalry Regiment was organized at Tuscumbia, Alabama, in October, 1862, and moved to Tennessee where it wintered. The men were from Franklin, Lauderdale, Lawrence, and Walker counties.
  • 4th Regiment, Alabama Cavalry (Russell's)
    4th (Russell's) Cavalry Regiment was formed at Murfreesboro, Tennessee, in December, 1862, by consolidating four companies from the 3rd (Forrest's Old) Tennessee Cavalry Regiment, six companies of the 4th Alabama Battalion, and the Russell Rangers or 15th Tennessee Cavalry Battalion. Its members were from the counties of Madison, Wilcox, Monroe, Cherokee, Jackson, Marshall, and Lawrence. was included in the surrender on May 4, 1865.
  • 5th Regiment, Alabama Cavalry
    5th Cavalry Regiment, organized at Tuscumbia, Alabama, in December, 1862, recruited its men in Morgan, Lawrence, Fayette, Franklin, Lauderdale, Tuscaloosa, and Marion counties.The small force that remained surrendered at Danville, Alabama, on May 6, 1865.

Units 6th through 11th[edit | edit source]

  • 6th Regiment, Alabama Cavalry
    6th Cavalry Regiment was organized at Pine Level, Alabama, during the spring of 1863. It contained men from Montgomery, Coffee, Tallapoosa, Pike, Barbour, Macon, Henry, and Coosa counties.it was included in the surrender of the Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana.
  • 7th Regiment, Alabama Cavalry
    7th Cavalry Regiment was formed at Newborn, Alabama, during July, 1863, with companies were raised in the counties of Randolph, Shelby, Greene, Pickens, and Montgomery. The 7th was later attached to B.M. Thomas', W.W. Allen's, and Bell's Brigade. In April, 1865, it had less than 300 effectives and half that number surrendered at Gainesville, Alabama, in May.
    Ordered to Corinth, the regiment disbanded prior to the Battle of Shiloh, as the time of service of most of the companies expired in April, 1862.
  • 8th Regiment, Alabama Cavalry (Hatch's)
    8th (Hatch's) Cavalry Regiment was organized at Newbern, Alabama, in April, 1864, by adding one company to the nine of Hatch's Battalion that had entered Confederate service the previous winter. The men were from Sumter, Dallas, Tuscaloosa, Greene, Marengo, Choctaw, and Fayette counties.on May 14, 1865, surrendered at Gainesville.
  • 8th Regiment, Alabama Cavalry (Livingston's)
    8th (Livingstone's) Cavalry Regiment completed its organization at Gadsden Alabama, during the spring of 1864.Later the unit was assigned to General Clanton's Brigade, Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana. By February, 1865, its strength had grown to 600, but after skirmishing in Alabama, few were present when the regiment surrendered at Gainesville in May.
  • 9th Regiment, Alabama Cavalry (Malone's)
    9th Cavalry Regiment [also called 7th Regiment] was organized near Tullahoma, Tennessee, in May, 1863, by consolidating the 14th Alabama Partisan Rangers and the 2nd (19th) Alabama Cavalry Battalion. The officers and men were from the counties of Limestone, De Kalb, Madison, Morgan, Lauderdale, Cherokee, and Lawrence. The regiment surrendered with the Army of Tennessee.
  • 10th Regiment, Alabama Cavalry
    10th Cavalry Regiment was organized during the winter of 1863-1864 with men recruited in those counties north of the Tennessee River. It principally was restricted to outpost duty in the Tennessee Valley and disbanded during the spring of 1865.
  • 11th Regiment, Alabama Cavalry
    11th Cavalry Regiment [also called 10th Regiment] was organized in June, 1864, by consolidating part of Forrest's Alabama Cavalry Regiment, Williams' Alabama Cavalry Battalion, and newly recruited companies. Its members were from Franklin, Lauderdale, Morgan, and Limestone counties. surrendered at Decatur, Alabama, in May, 1865.

Units 12th through 24th[edit | edit source]

  • 12th Regiment, Alabama Cavalry
    12th Cavalry Regiment was assembled during the summer of 1864. It was formed by adding four companies to the seven of Hundley's 12th (1st) Battalion Partisan Rangers. Its members were from the counties of Etowah, Jackson, Saint Clair, Marshall, Jefferson, De Kalb, and Cherokee. it disbanded the night before the Army of Tennessee surrendered, April 25, 1865.
  • 24th Battalion, Alabama Cavalry
    24th Cavalry Battalion was organized in February, 1864, with three companies. It was chiefly composed of youths and served in Wheeler's Cavalry Corps surrendered with the Army of Tennessee.
