Aisne Department

History[edit | edit source]

Aisne is one of the original 83 departments created on 4 March 1790. It was created from parts of the former provinces of Champagne, Île-de-France, and Picardy. The name comes from the Aisne River, which crosses the department from east to west. Aisne borders Belgium to the northeast.[1]
