Ain Department

History

Ain is a department named after the Ain River on the eastern edge of France in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. The Department was created during the French Revolution and was subdivided into 9 districts, 49 cantons and 501 communes. During the first French Consulate (1802) the districts were abolished and the Department of Ain now consists of 4 arrondissements, 23 cantons and 408 communes.[1]
