A veces es posible adivinar en que un inmigrante se originó a través de mapas de apellidos. Estos mapas muestran donde ocurrieron apellidos en diferentes partes del mundo y en diferentes épocas. Por investigaciones inmigrantes, estos mapas provean una estrategía de aprender el origen de un inmigrante. Rebuscadores tendrán más éxito sí el apellido es menos común y sí la familia Europea no migró a menudo.
