2nd Regiment, Kansas Cavalry

Brief History

The 2nd Regiment, Kansas Cavalry was organized at Kansas City as 12th Kansas Infantry. At Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, designation changed to 9th Kansas Infantry February 4, 1862, and to 2nd Cavalry March 5, 1862. The regiment mustered out August 17, 1865.

The second Regiment consisted of companies in Atchison, Brown, Johnson, Miami, Wyandotte, Linn, Marshall and Doniphan, and Republic Shawnee counties. Men often enlisted in a company recruited in the counties where they lived though not always. After many battles, companies might be combined because so many men were killed or wounded. However if you are unsure which company your ancestor was in, try the company recruited in his county first.
