FamilySearch Images Not Found in the FamilySearch Catalog

From FamilySearch Wiki

Introduction[edit | edit source]

This list is user-updated; all updates are manual. These images are not accessible via the FS Catalog and are not part of any Infinity/Online project. The following are mostly image-only collections, or in other words, not all are indexed by record-subject names. If some images are not searchable/findable, it's because there are restrictions on the images that only allow certain FamilySearch users to access them and/or while browsing on certain networks. These restrictions are based off of the privacy laws of the government from which the images were acquired and/or the contract with the custodian of the original records. Collections that are not completed are updated weekly with new images, therefore, clicking on the link will navigate to updated search results. If any links produce 0 search results for more than two consecutive weeks, please make a comment on the Talk page. The content of this article is current as of 7 Mar 2024.

Searching: Best Practices[edit | edit source]

FamilySearch Explore Images is a new and evolving platform for searching digitized historical records. Once any of these fields are searched, more search parameters can be entered to focus the search results. If you are interested in helping to improve the data for any one of these projects and have a FamilySearch account, please contact Joseph La Fazia: joseph.lafazia@familysearch.org.

Locality[edit | edit source]

The place used to organize the images in this database describes where the records were created and not where the life event took place; in some cases these places are the same. When searching a specific place, the search results will include all images that are described by that place and any other images described by a place within the jurisdiction.

Dates[edit | edit source]

The date used to organize the images in this database describes when the records were created and not when the life event took place; in some cases these dates are the same or similar.

Record Types & Life Events[edit | edit source]

You may search by a major life event first, then specify a record type.

Image Group Number (DGS)[edit | edit source]

In many cases historical records are not digitized in any particular order, so the Image Group Number (DGS) cannot be used to determine record type and date range order. However, when you do find the record pertaining to an ancestor, it is always helpful to log the DGS number for future reference because you can search Explore Images by entering the DGS in the Image Group Number search field.

Custodian[edit | edit source]

When this data is available, it is hyperlinked. Clicking on the hyperlinked Custodian will take you to a search results screen showing all images FamilySearch has acquired from that Custodian.

Keyword[edit | edit source]

This field allows you to search open-text fields (not standardized), so it is helpful if searching for a specific volume, archive reference number, and/or manuscript title (Record Title). When subject names are included in any of these fields, then those names become a keyword. Use double quotation marks (") around the search term. Separate multiple search terms by a single comma in between each term. When searching for specific microfilm numbers that were digitized, search the microfilm number without quotation marks.
