WikiProject:Remove Categories from Sandboxes

Removing old categories from Sandboxes

Purpose

The purpose is to examine our personal sandbox pages and clear out any locality/topic specific categories and replace it with the Sandbox Category. This will help clean up category lists listing only relevant Wiki articles in that category. We are asking all missionaries to clean up their own sandbox pages.

Task List

Instructions

1. Use either an old sandbox Wiki page or create a new one. Here are instructions on how to make your own sandbox page.

2. Once you have a sandbox page to work on, copy and paste the following onto your sandbox page.

{{Special:PrefixIndex/User:YOURUSERNAME}}

3. Replace YOURUSERNAME with your personal FamilySearch username. For example, {{Special:PrefixIndex/User:Batsondl}}

4. Now save the page. This special code will list all of your CORRECTLY titled sandbox pages onto this Sandbox page.

5. Starting with the first sandbox on your list, visit your page and see if you are currently using it for a project you are actively working on.

6. If you no longer need the content on the page, go to Part 1. If you wish to keep the content on the page, go to Part 2.

Please note, you do not have to delete any content from any old sandboxes. The desire here is to clean up old content and take sandboxes out of categories. There is no pressure to delete anything from your sandboxes.

Part 1: Don't Need Content on the Page

1. If you've decided you no longer need the content on the sandbox page, click on Edit source at the top of your sandbox Wiki page.

2. Delete any content from the sandbox page as necessary, including any categories on the page. You may want to leave a note on the page for you to reuse the sandbox page, but there is no pressure to do so.

3. If the sandbox category is already on the page, do not delete it. If it is not on the page, add the following wikitext code to the page:

[[Category:Sandbox]]

3. Save the Wiki page. You can leave a summary message if you wish, but it is not required.

4. Check the bottom of the Wiki page to make sure the only category listed is "Sandbox" and that it is a working link.

5. Return to the list of sandbox pages and choose the next one to review.

6. When you have completed reviewing all of your sandbox pages, put the date you finished on the Task List.

Part 2: Keep Content on the Page

1. If you wish to keep the content, you may leave the content as is.

2. In addition to the category regarding the content on the page, check to see if there is a sandbox category on the page. If there is not a Sandbox category, add the following wikitext code to help identify that this is a sandbox page.

[[Category:Sandbox]]

3. Review the locality or topic category on the page and decide if you need to keep it on this sandbox page. If you are actively working on this page and will be replacing a whole Wiki page, you should leave the category on the sandbox page. If you are not going to replace a whole page, consider removing the locality and/or topic category. Be sure the Sandbox Category is not removed.

4. Save the Wiki page. You can leave a summary message if you wish, but it is not required.

5. Check the bottom of the Wiki page to make sure the category/categories have working links.

6. Return to the list of sandbox pages and choose the next one to review.

7. When you have completed reviewing your sandbox pages, put the date you finished on the Task List.
