Population Registers

Some Romanian cities in areas formerly under Hungarian rule maintained registers of their residents and those moved into these cities. These are called population registers (actele poliţiei). These records which exist as early as 1848 and were discontinued with the beginning of Hungarian civil registration in 1895. Special lists of those in certain trades (such as domestic servants) were also kept. These records give date and place of birth, parents names, addresses, dates of removal. They can be used to locate residents of cities and determine previous places of residence. These records group families together and can be used to prove relationships.

Location:
Population registers are usually kept in city and regional archives. None are available through the Family History Library.
