Brief History

The 54th Kentucky Mounted Infantry was organized at New Castle, Kentucky, in September, 1864 under special authority from the War Department. On its 2nd Saltville expedition the 54th lost many men by exposure to the extreme cold weather. It was mustered out at Louisville, Kentucky, September 1st, 1865.
