Brief History[edit | edit source]

This Unit was organized at Keokuk and mustered in June 8, 1861. Veterans consolidated to a Battalion of three Companies July, 1864.
Transferred to 2nd Iowa Infantry as Companies "A," "F" and "I," November 4, 1864. [1]

Companies in this Regiment with the Counties of Origin[edit | edit source]

Men often enlisted in a company recruited in the counties where they lived though not always. After many battles, companies might be combined because so many men were killed or wounded. However if you are unsure which company your ancestor was in, try the company recruited in his county first.

Company A - enrolled in Dubuque County

Company B - enrolled in Marion County

Company C - enrolled in Clayton County

Company D - enrolled in Winneshiek County

Company E - enrolled in Story County

Company F - enrolled in Fayette County

Company G - enrolled in Warren County

Company H - enrolled in Mahaska County

Company I - enrolled in Butler County

Company K - enrolled in Blackhawk County

Information about the companies and their counties comes from Iowa. Adjutant General's Office, Report of the Adjutant General and Acting Quartermaster General of the State of Iowa, (Des Moines [Iowa]: F.W. Palmer, 1863), pages 88-128. FHL book 977.7 M25ag.

Rosters are also listed in this book.
