Brief History[edit | edit source]

The 73rd Regiment, New York Infantry organized under authority of the War Department, at Camp Scott, Staten Island, N. Y., as 4th Regiment, Sickles' Brigade, July to October, 1861. It was assigned at various times to various places and commands. The regiment mustered out at Washington, D. C., June 29, 1865.[1]

Companies in this Regiment with the Counties of Origin[edit | edit source]

Men often enlisted in a company recruited in the counties where they lived though not always. After many battles, companies might be combined because so many men were killed or wounded. However if you are unsure which company your ancestor was in, try the company recruited in his county first.

The regiment was recruited principally at New York City
