Militia

  • 32nd Regiment, North Carolina Militia
    Organized at Drewry's Bluff, Virginia, in April, 1862, using the 1st North Carolina Infantry Battalion as its nucleus.
    Surrendered with 4 officers and 110 men on April 9, 1865.
  • 37th Regiment, North Carolina Militia
    Organized by Colonel C.C. Lee, was assembled at High Point, North Carolina, in November, 1861.
    Of the 379 engaged at Gettysburg, more than thirty percent were disabled.
    Surrendered 10 officers and 98 men.
  • 66th Battalion, North Carolina Militia
    Organized at Kinston, North Carolina, in October, 1862, by consolidating the 8th North Carolina Battalion Partisan Rangers and the 13th North Carolina Infantry Battalion.
    Surrendered on April 26, 1865, with the Army of Tennessee.
  • 68th Regiment, North Carolina Militia
    Organized near Jackson, North Carolina, during the early spring of 1864.
    In April, 1865, the men were ordered to return home and acquire mounts so that the unit could be converted to cavalry. But while these orders were being carried out, the war ended.

Local Defense

  • 2nd Battalion, North Carolina Local Defense Troops
    This battalion, commonly referred to as the Arsenal Guard.
    composed of employees, detailed men, and nonconscripts who worked at the Fayetteville Arsenal and Armory.
    Doing the course of the war seven companies were raised at this manufactory and were organized into a battalion.
    Surrendered 26 April 1865.

Home Guards

  • 11th Battalion, North Carolina Home Guards (Whitford's Infantry Battalion (also called 11th Battalion, Whitford's Rangers, or Whitford's Partisans]
    Organized during the spring of 1862 with four companies, later increased to six.
    January, 1864, it merged into the 67th North Carolina Regiment.

State Troops

  • 40th Regiment, North Carolina State Troops
    Organized at Bald Head, Smith's Island, North Carolina, in November, 1863, from heavy artillery companies formed in 1861 and 1862.
    In 1865 the unit was converted to infantry and assigned to Hagood's Brigade.
    Surrendered with the Army of Tennessee on April 26.
