  • Archives collect and preserve original documents of organizations such as churches or governments. Libraries generally collect published sources such as books, maps, and microfilm.
  • If you plan to visit a repository, contact them and ask for information about their collection, hours, services, and fees. Ask if they require you to have a reader’s ticket (a paper indicating you are a responsible researcher) to view the records, and ask how to obtain one.
  • Although the records you need may be in an archive or library, the FamilySearch Library may have microfilmed and/or digitized copies of them.

The National Library of Korea possesses an extensive digital collection containing an archive for the Korean Newspaper, Gazette, Records relating to Korea's history with foreign relations and records relating to the history, research, and art that has been created in South Korea. Many of these resources are acceptable to anyone who accesses their website. They also possess digital repositories for their patrons/members.[8]

Located in the middle of the campus, the library has 1,589 seats, and holds over 460,000 oriental books, 90,000 western books and 6,848 types of periodicals and collected papers. The library has 100,000 pieces of media data, such as audio/video materials, slides and CD-ROM. Through the Digital Library System, data searching and viewing full texts of web databases are possible on the library web-site. Data which are not in the collection of the library are provided from libraries in Korea and abroad. The library is pursuing a joint list and cross-loan service with private universities in the northeastern part of Seoul.[1]

  • Korean Family Census Register (births, marriages, divorces, deaths and adoptions). The family register is compiled for each family unit when the family head has established a permanent address within the jurisdiction of the ward office.
  • For a Korean Family Census Register write to the specific ward office in which the Family Census Register is filed. To facilitate locating the Family Census Register in the ward office files, the following must be provided:
    • Name of the head of family written in either Korean or Chinese characters
    • Family’s permanent address in Korea.

A certified copy of American Report and Certificate of Marriages may be obtained by writing the specific ward office in which the marriage actually took place.
