Jersey Archive Information Leaflets: Family History in Jersey

  • The Jersey Archive has all of the major family history sources for the island available as original records and on microfilm. The main resources held by the Archive for genealogical research are:
*German Occupation Registration Cards Information and images of over 30,000 Islanders who lived in Jersey during the Occupation.
*Census Records
*Education Department records
*Almanacs
*Militia Nominal Rolls and Attestation papers
*Records for Businesses, Societies and Associations
*Personal and Estate Records
  • All the Indexes and Transcriptions of the Channel Islands Family History Society are available on open shelves.
  • The Jersey Archive catalogue can be consulted at the Jersey Archive and on-line at: http://catalogue.jerseyheritage.org/ The OPAC allows you to search for names, places or subjects, there is also a detailed search option.
  • Enquiries and research can be made in person, by post, e­mail, telephone or fax. Detailed enquiries and research can be undertaken by Archive staff at £20 per hour.
  • Photocopying and photographic services are available, subject to conditions, and charges are made for all copies.
  • To order original documents, you will need a Reader’s Ticket, which can be obtained at the Archive on production of a valid photographic ID. There are no charges for the Ticket or the personal use of the Archive.[1]

  • The main resources held by the Archive for genealogical research are:
*Register of Stranger Poor (1892-1914), listing non-locals of limited means arriving in Guernsey between 1833 (registration could be retrospective) and 1914.
*Foulon Cemetery Registers (1856 onwards)
*States' records from the period of the German Occupation of Guernsey 1940-1945 are also available for public viewing, including:
*Identity Registration Forms
*Ledgers which give details of evacuees making application to return to the island in 1944-45;
*Administrative records from all of the ten civil parishes in Guernsey. Records in these collections which may be useful for researching family history :::*Including deeds and tax books.
*St Peter Port Constables' Collection, including a list of Registered Persons sent from the island (1842-80), which gives details of people's names, ages, occupation and reason for being sent away.
*Procureur of the Poor/ Outdoor Assistance
*Funeral Remembrance Cards
*School records
*Deeds, etc. relating to property transactions
*Military Records
*Ecclesiastical Records
*Anglican parish records of St Andrew, Castel, Forest, St Martin, St Pierre du Bois, St Saviour and Vale and also the other Anglican churches of Holy Trinity, St James' Church, and St Peter's, Sark.
*Baptist Chapel records, including those of Siloë, Bethesda and Bethel (now Shiloh);
*Methodist Church collection, relating to both French and English circuits from the 18th century to the present;
*Roman Catholic Church records for St Joseph's, Notre Dame du Rosaire, St Yves, La Chaumière, St Magloire and Delancey.

  • The Island Archives is open weekdays 9.30am - 4.30pm, by appointment only. To book your visit please call the team on 01481 224512 or email archives@gov.gg.
  • The Island Archives welcomes all enquiries by email, phone or via our online contact form. Please provide as much detail as possible about your enquiry. This will help you make the most of your research and ensure the records you would like to see are available.
  • There is no charge for consulting records at the Island Archives, or for staff advice on available resources.

*The Library’s genealogical resources include printed material on Jersey and the other Channel Islands, unpublished family histories, family trees, almanacs, directories and rate lists, indexes to the microfilm PR.O. census returns for Jersey and indexes to civil and church registers and other records. ::*Enquiries can be made in person, by letter, telephone, fax or e-mail. Replies to fax and e-mail enquiries will usually be made by post, so please help us by including your full postal address.
*The charge for research is £15 per hour plus any extra charges incurred in the purchase of copies of certificates.
*The Library welcomes copies of family trees and is pleased to accept donations for services provided.
*Photocopying is carried out at the librarian’s discretion.
*The microfilm reader/printer and microfiche reader are available on a first come, first served, basis. There is a free guide to the library and an introduction for family history research.[2]

  • Civil and parish microfilm records: The Priaulx Library holds Guernsey civil records beginning in 1840, civil records for Alderney (part of the Bailiwick of Guernsey) beginning in 1850, and parish registers for the Bailiwick of Guernsey beginning in 1570.
