Military records (Militaire registers, Registres de conscription)

Research use: Useful when following soldier’s families to find births of children, marriages in various locations, and births and deaths of soldiers.

Record type: Military registers, service records, conscription lists, mercenary lists.

Time Period: 1700-present.

Content: Soldiers’ and mercenaries’ names; ages, birthplaces, rank, dates and places of muster, religion, languages, deportment. Birth registers and lists of 17-21 year old males, their parents, residence, physical descriptions. Death registers show date and place or country of death, discharge records show dates and places of discharge, ages, handicaps, residences.

Location: State, provincial and city archives; Archives Royales de l’Armee, Brussels (1825-1900), Service Historique de l’Armee, Chateau de Vincennes, France (1795-1815).
