Stiby Church

History[edit | edit source]

The name Stighby, as the parish was known in 1333, is composed of "stig" (path, smaller walkway) and "by" (village, farm). Stiby parish, as it is known today, has medieval origins and is a gently hilly farming area. A medieval church existed before the current church was built in its place in 1856. There are two older fixtures from the old church: the pulpit from the 17th century and an aquamanil (a medieval vessel, typically shaped like an animal or human figure, used for pouring water over hands to wash them) from the 13th century.[1][2][3]
