Gryts church

History

Gryth, as it was known in 1403 during Danish rule, is now referred to as "Gryts" to distinguish it from other parishes called Gryt in Östergötland and Södermanland counties. The name Gryt (stone) refers to the stony ground of the area. Several flat stones from an Iron Age burial ground were used to finish the medieval wall surrounding the Gryt church cemetery built next door. The church itself dates to the 12th or 13th century and is believed to be built by a student of the master builder of Lund Cathedral. The medieval baptismal font was lost for 300 years and returned to the church in 1959.[1][2]
