Maria Church

History[edit | edit source]

The fishing village of 1450 " Botzstædæ" is now an urban seaside resort town. A Danish town at the time, Båtstad (boat-place), was sacked and burned by Swedish forces during the Nordic Seven Years War. In 1870, another fire destroyed most of the city. Mariakyrkan (Mary's Church), a 3 nave 15th century building, survived both fires.[1]

Record Loss[edit | edit source]

The entire church archive of Båstad was destroyed in a fire 9 June 1870. Nine volumes of replacement records for deaths, household, mantal and other parish business were created after the fire.[2]
