Vedby Church

History

Vedby parish has medieval origins. Known as Whithby in 1364, the name is composed of an Old Danish word for forest with "by" ( village). The parish area is a cultivated plain in the southwest with the rest a slightly hilly, forested area near the Bäljane River. The current brick Vedby church was built in 1865-1867 on the site of previous church built in the Middle Ages. The sandstone baptismal font, whose cup is decorated with a round arch frieze, probably dates from the 12th century. The accompanying copper baptismal bowl dates from the 17th century.[1] [2][3]
