History[edit | edit source]
Written as Wandhkiffæ in 1481, the parish name Vankiva is composed of the Skåne dialect "vann" (water) and kiv (water fight). The name refers to where the two streams "quarreled" for dominance just east of the church. Nearly 20 settlements have been found from the Stone Age and the Iron Age burial ground Mala stenar is located within the parish. The church was built in stone at the end of the 12th century. It has since been expanded in stages but retained the triumphal crucifix and the church's two bells from the period. The baptismal font dates to around the year 1200.[1][2][3]
