Torekov Church

History[edit | edit source]

According to legend, the place name refers to Sankt Tora, a local saint depicted in the coat of arms of Bjäre county. In reality, the name (Torekow, as early as 1489), refers to the small bay where Torekov is located. "Thora" is interpreted as ‘height’ and kove is an Old Germanic dialect word meaning ‘hut’ (English: cove). Torekov was once the center of a Bronze Age culture and home to numerous ancient remains, the most monumental being Dagshög. Torekov's original church, built before 1344 and dedicated to the Virgin Thora, was burned down along with 47 houses in 1858. The church's foundation is preserved in a park west of the replacement church built after the fire. [1][2]
