History
Written as Filkestathx in 1420, Fielckestadtt in 1552, then Filkestad, Fjelkestad and Fjälkestad, the parish name comes from the church village. The root "filke" is believed to be a dialect word meaning "slime" referring to the nearby marshlands. Between 1836-1883, the parish was joined with Råbelöv and called "Fjelkestad med Råbelöv" parish. A fire in 1917 destroyed the original 12th century church building. The present edifice was rebuilt in 1921 and supplied with original medieval furnishings from nearby Råbelöv castle church.[1][2][3]
