Oppmanna Church

History

Known by many names, including Ommeting, Omating, Oppmadinge (1479) and even Nørreby, Oppmanna parish takes its name from the church village. The original Old Danish name is composed of "opp" (up) and "Math-ung" (moist or beach - meadow) reflecting the settlement's position on the eastern (upper) shore of Lake Oppmanna. The original Romanesque brick church was built in the 12th century. Instead of demolishing the church, it underwent a radical reconstruction in 1855 - 1856. Some of the original inventory remain such as the baptismal font from around 1200 decorated with images from the childhood story of Jesus and two bells from 1521 hang in the tower. [1][2]
