Historys

The history of Brazlândia begins when four families from Goiás and Minas arrived in the lands of Chapada do Vai dos Angicos. It was the Abreu de Lima, the Rodrigues do Prado, the Cardoso de Oliveira and the Braz de Lima who populated the land that would later become Brazlândia.

The development was brought mainly by the Braz de Lima, from Carmo do Paranaíba, in Minas Gerais, and by the Cardoso de Oliveira, from Posse, in Goiás, who already had a tradition as farmers and ranchers. The two clans soon established a family and business relationship, carrying out non-pastoral activities for the next three decades.

In the early 1930s, the families managed, through political influence, for the village to be elevated to the category of district of Santa Luiza (today Luziânia). Both the Braz and the Cardoso had businesses in the city of Goiás. That's when the place was named Brazlândia, in honor of the largest family in the region. The decree creating the district is dated April 15, 1932, being the most significant date for the city. Even so, the anniversary is celebrated on June 5, because it was on that date, in 1933, that the subprefecture of Brazlândia was created.

President Juscelino Kubitschek's decision to take the Federal Capital to the Central Plateau changed the course of little Brazlândia. In 1958, more than a thousand bushels of the city were expropriated amicably. Only the area surrounding the urban center of Brazlândia was not transferred to the Government.

Many of the old farms in the region disappeared after the damming of the Rio Descoberto and the formation of Lago do Descoberto, intended for the accumulation of drinking water for Brasília. Today the dam is responsible for supplying more than 60% of the water in the entire Federal District.

If at the time of the inauguration of Brasília, Brazlândia, already incorporated into the Federal District, had less than a thousand residents, in the following years the city experienced rapid growth. Hundreds of Japanese farmers and those from other parts of the country were settled in the Alexandre Gusmão Rural Nucleus. Other migrants from Goiás settled in the urban area. In the late 1960s, a subdivision of 2,000 houses was created to accommodate the residents of the Vietcong favela, near Taguatinga.

After the inauguration of Brasília in the 1960s, Brazlândia was annexed as a satellite city of Brasília.

In the mid-1980s, when Vila São José was created, the population of Brazlândia was 25 thousand inhabitants. What didn't change so much the calm way of life of the residents, still present in the old and new streets. Brazlândia is an agricultural power in the Federal District and begins to explore the region for tourism, rich in natural beauties and with traditional festivities throughout the year.

Currently Brazlândia is a city with countryside characteristics and stands out in agriculture, in the cultivation of tomatoes, guavas and strawberries. It is the 3rd largest producer of strawberries in Brazil. It has the largest colony of Japanese in the Federal District, which contributed greatly to the region being responsible for almost 60% of the agricultural supply in the Federal District and surroundings.
