Brief History

The 4th Regiment, Ohio Infantry was mustered in June 4, 1861 at Camp Dennison, Ohio.  They were mustered out July 12, 1865 at Washington, District of Columbia.

Men often enlisted in a company recruited in the counties where they lived though not always. After many battles, companies might be combined because so many men were killed or wounded. However if you are unsure which company your ancestor was in, try the company recruited in his county first.

Three Years Service:
Company A - also known as "Knox County Guards' - many men from Mt. Vernon, Knox County.
Company B - also known as "Union Guards" -  many men from Mt. Vernon, Knox County.
Company C - also known as "Delaware Guards" -  many men from Delaware County.
Company D - also known as "Hardin County Guards" -  many men from Kenton & Patterson, Hardin County and Richland County.
Company E - also known as "Given Guards" -  many men from Wooster, Wayne County.
Company F - also known as "Canton Guards" - many men from Stark County; and 16 men from the Sandyville Light Guards. Tuscarawas County.
Company G - also known as "Kenton Rangers" - many men from Kenton, Hardin County.
Company H - many men from Marion County.
.Company I - also known as "Olentangy Guards" - many men from Delaware County.
Company K - many men from Marion and Richland Counties.
