Ortsfamilienbuch, Ortssippenbuch, Dorfsippenbuch[edit | edit source]

An Ortsfamilienbuch (aka Ortssippenbuch or Dorfsippenbuch) contains the entire membership of a village from the earliest history to the present day. It is build on church records, court records, tax records, land records and any other record which serves to establish a complete picture of who has lived in a village at any given time. Every member of the community is accounted for by a number and linked to each other when appropriate. The text to showcase a member of the community can be abbreviated, even explained in symbols. The author of the Ortsfamilienbuch usually provides explanations of abbreviations and symbols he used at the beginning of his text. Some, however, may assume that such are common knowledge among genealogists.

A sample page of what an Ortsfamilienbuch can look like can be found at Siefkas.com here. A list of common symbols and abbreviations can be found at Ulf Neundorfer's site, Abkürzungen and Zeichen.
