FamilySearch has designated scanning and digitizing opportunities at our Center in order to preserve personal family histories. While using the scanning equipment, we ask that only family-owned documents, photos, videos, and movies be scanned, digitized or converted. Please do not scan, digitize or copy any material with commercial content or copyrighted material. Please review the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ policies on copyright; “Copyright is protection given by law to the creators of original works of authorship that are expressed in a tangible form, including: Literary, musical, dramatic, and choreographic works. Works of art, photography, and sculpture. Audio and audiovisual works (such as movies and videos, CDs, and DVDs). Computer programs or games. Internet and other databases. Church members should strictly observe all copyright laws. Generally, only copyright owners may authorize duplication (copying), distribution, public performance, public display, or derivatives of their work. Using a work in any of these ways without authorization from the copyright owner is contrary to Church policy and may also subject the Church or the user to legal liability.” (General Handbook, 38.8.13)

Equipment is provided to capture, in real-time, the video from full-size VHS, Compact VHS (VHS-C), 8mm Video Cassette tapes, High 8, and MiniDV. The captured video files will be in .mp4 formats and will be transferred to the patron's personal USB drive to take home. A two-hour video will need about 8G of USB storage for the .mpg format and 2G for the .mp4 format.

The video tape can be split into smaller topic-based segments during the conversion - birthday party, vacation, graduation, etc.

The result is small subject-based videos that can be uploaded to Social Media (Facebook), loaded on a phone, or easily shared with family & friends.

{{Box | color=green | float=left | width=65% | title=Preparing to Use the Video Tape Converter | content= For a successful experience, consider the following:

  • Full-size VHS tapes and compact VHS tapes. Other formats with the patron's camera/player + cable
  • Rewind tapes or set at start point before coming, if possible, to maximize time
  • Expect about two hours of video content during a session with half hour of setup/wrap up
  • Bring an external USB drive with at least 16G or more of available space for a single session. [3.0 USB drive is strongly recommended]
  • MP4 video files will be the result of the conversion. DVD is possible if desired but not typical
  • Plan to complete all efforts within the scheduled time period
  • Do not bring tapes with commercial content or copyrighted material, only family-related videos
