Historical Background

The area of Burundi was colonized by Germany in 1885. In 1903 the territory was incorporated into German East Africa. In 1919 it became part of the Belgian colony of Ruanda-Urundi. On 1 July 1962 this colony became two independent nations, Rwanda and Burundi.^[1]
