  • Archives collect and preserve original documents of organizations such as churches or governments. Libraries generally collect published sources such as books, maps, and microfilm.
  • If you plan to visit a repository, contact them and ask for information about their collection, hours, services, and fees. Ask if they require you to have a reader’s ticket (a paper indicating you are a responsible researcher) to view the records, and ask how to obtain one.
  • Although the records you need may be in an archive or library, the FamilySearch Library may have microfilmed and/or digitized copies of them.

It should be noted that most records relating to Singapore were damaged or lost during the Japanese occupation, but the country has done a marvelous job of preserving what records could be recovered.[1]

  • The National Library of Singapore houses a wide variety of different books and records. Some of these are available digitally on their Digital sources.
  • NewspaperSG is an online resource of current and historic Singapore and Malaya newspapers. Search digital archive of newspapers published between 1831-2009, or find information on over 200 newspaper titles in the National Library’s microfilm collection. Full-text is only available for issues up to 1989. t
  • The term "National Library" could be said to apply to the original institution and all its affiliates.
