The Seychelles Islands were first colonized by the French in 1768 in order to establish plantations of spices to compete with the Dutch monopoly. They were captured by the English in 1794 and incorporated as a dependency of Mauritius in 1814. In November 1903 the Seychelles Archipelago became a separate colony.
Internal self-government was achieved on 1 October 1975 and independence as a republic within the Commonwealth on 29 June 1976.

1794 - 1810 The British controlled the islands
1810 - 1903 Britain eventually assumed full control upon the surrender of Mauritius, formalized in 1814 at the Treaty of Paris and Seychelles then became a crown colony separate from Mauritius
1976 - Independence was granted as a republic within the Commonwealth
1979 - 1991 A constitution declared Seychelles a socialist one-party state
2013 - Seychelles declared a state of emergency; the tropical cyclone Felleng caused torrential rain, and flooding and landslides destroyed hundreds of houses
