Video Instructions[edit | edit source]

Task List[edit | edit source]

Part A - Fix Miscellaneous Sections[edit | edit source]

Step One - Sign Up[edit | edit source]

  • Sign up for a sandbox to work on using this Task List and click on the link to open the Wiki page.

Step Two - Fix Courthouse Link[edit | edit source]

  • Click on Edit Source for the page and go the the County Courthouse header.

  • Change the COUNTY County Courthouse link to COUNTY County Website.

Step Three - Remove Civil War Subheader[edit | edit source]

  • Do Ctrl + F to get to the Civil War header under Military Records. Or scroll down the page.

  • Delete the header listed below:

Online Civil War Indexes and Records<br>

Part B - Fix Births Header[edit | edit source]

Step One - Move the Collection[edit | edit source]

  • Move the following collection to the regular Births header (instead of Birth Substitutes) and add it chronologically to the other collections.
* 1640-1962 1680842 at FamilySearch — How to Use this Collection; Index

Step Two - Copy and Paste the same collection[edit | edit source]

  • This collection (you just moved in Step One) is full of church records but it does have a few government births.

  • Copy the following collection and add it to the Church Records header before other denominations listed. This collection has records for many different denominations.

* 1640-1962 1680842 at FamilySearch — How to Use this Collection; Index

Step Three - Birth Substitute Header - Delete Some Text[edit | edit source]

  • If the following is listed in the Birth Substitutes header, please delete them:

*See Town Clerks' Registers of Men who Served in the Civil War in the Civil War section of COUNTY for birth information.

**See COUNTY section above for birth information.

Part C - Fix Marriages Header[edit | edit source]

Step One - Move the Template[edit | edit source]

  • Under the Marriages header, you should see a template that looks like this (the years in the template will be different for each county):
1870

  • Cut and paste this template directly after the Vital Records header and Vital Records Intro template.

Step Two - Marriage Substitutes Header - Newspapers[edit | edit source]

  • We do not list substitute records under different headings in Vital Records. We need to move the information to the correct header.

  • All or some of these collections are listed under the county Marriage Substitutes Header. We will move them to the Newspaper Header on the county page (merge the info with what is already under the Newspaper header):

*1777-1834 Fred Q. Bowman,10,000 Vital Records of Eastern New York, 1777-1834 (Baltimore,MD: Genealogical Pub. Co., 1987). Ancestry ($); MyHeritage ($); ; . These newspaper notices refer to people up and down the East Coast as well as midwesterners and persons from as far west as the State of California. Also browsable.

Step Three - Marriage Substitutes Header - Census Records[edit | edit source]

  • There are also several links that should be in the Census Records header. Cut the following collections:

*1864-5, 1874-5 See Marriage Schedule information in the State Census section of Albany for marriage information for 1864-5, and 1874-5.
*1874-5 Marriages from the 1875 Allegany Co., NY State Census at NYGenWeb

Step Four - Marriage Substitutes Header - Marriages[edit | edit source]

  • We've found that sometimes this collection is accidentally in the Marriage Substitutes header. Move it to the Marriages header and place it in chronological order.

* 1686-1980 1680847 at FamilySearch — How to Use this Collection; Index

Part D - Fix Deaths Header[edit | edit source]

Step One - Add the collection to Deaths Header and Church Records Header[edit | edit source]

  • Under the Deaths Header locate the following collection, copy it, and paste it in the Church Records header just before the other denominations listed.

* 1824-1962 2373798 at FamilySearch — How to Use this Collection; Index

Step Two - Death Substitutes Header - Newspapers[edit | edit source]

  • All or some of these collections are listed on the county Marriage Substitutes Header. Some of these collections you may have already copy and pasted in the Newspaper Header. Double check and copy and paste any that are not listed.

*1777-1834 Fred Q. Bowman,10,000 Vital Records of Eastern New York, 1777-1834 (Baltimore,MD: Genealogical Pub. Co., 1987). Ancestry ($); MyHeritage ($); ; . Abstracted from newspaper marriage and death columns.<br>
*1801-1890 Barber Collection- Newspaper Deaths at Ancestry– ($); Index. Information extracted from the "Brooklyn Eagle" and the "New York Evening Post." <br>
*1804-1850 Fred Q. Bowman, 8000 More Vital Records of Eastern New York State, 1804-1850 (Rhinebeck, New York: Kinship Books, 1991). ; . Abstracts of newspaper marriage and death columns.<br>
*1809-1850 10,000 Vital Records of Western New York, 1809-1850 at Ancestry ($). Info from newspapers.
*1856-1863 Index to Marriages and Deaths in the New York Herald at Ancestry– ($); Index. These newspaper notices refer to people up and down the East Coast as well as midwesterners and persons from as far west as the State of California. Also browsable.

Step Three - Deaths Substitutes Header - Census Records[edit | edit source]

  • There are also several links about Mortality schedules that belong only in the Census Records header. Cut the following collections and paste them below the Mortality Schedule template:

*1849-50, 1859-60, 1869-70, 1879-80 See Mortality Schedule information in the Federal Census section of Albany for death information.<br>
*1864-5, 1874-5 See Mortality Schedule information in the State Cens ection ofbany County, New York Genealogy|Albany]] for death information for 1864-5, and 1874-5.

Step Three - Death Substitutes Header - Delete Some Text[edit | edit source]

  • If the following is listed in the Deaths Substitutes header, please delete them:

*See Town Clerks' Registers of Men Who Served in the Civil War in the Civil War section of Albany for death information.<br>
For information about town vital statistics (including births and deaths) contact the the city, town or village clerk.<br>

Step Four - Rogue Collection[edit | edit source]

  • Someone added a birth records collection in the Deaths Substitute header. Delete it (it's already under the Births header)

* 1640-1962 1680842 at FamilySearch — How to Use this Collection; Index

Part E - GenWeb Collections[edit | edit source]

Step One - Move GenWeb Substitute Records Links[edit | edit source]

  • GenWeb collections: If there are any Genweb collections that are for obituaries, churches, or Mortality censuses listed among the births, marriages, or deaths headers, move the collection to the respective header.

  • For your information: only collections labeled Obituaries belong under Obituaries; Anything labeled deaths or death notices, should be under Newspapers. There is overlap at times - if the collection says both Obituaries and death notices in the title, it goes under both headings, Obituaries and
    Newspapers.

Step Two - Remove Substitute Records Headers[edit | edit source]

  • Be sure to delete any of the following headers you might find under the Vital Records header:

Birth Substitutes
Birth Indexes
Marriage Substitutes
Marriage indexes
Death Substitutes
Death Indexes

Part F - Review Archives, Libraries, and Museums Headers[edit | edit source]

  • In some of the counties, I have found Archives, Libraries, and Museums listed under the incorrect headers. Can you review the sections on the page and move the repository to the correct header?

Part G - Save the Page[edit | edit source]

  • Preview the page and review each section to make sure the links look correct.

  • Once everything looks correct, save the page.

  • Go to the next sandbox to review.
