Montana was the 41st State to join the Union on November 8, 1889. Montana was formed from the Montana Territory. It first appears on the 1870 U.S. Census.

Online State and Territorial Censuses
State censuses are census records that were taken at the state-level rather than at the federal. Often, but not always, a state took their census in ten year increments 5 years from when the Federal Census was taken, such as 1885.
