History

The poor-law union of Lanchester comprises 18 chapelries or townships, and contains a population of 9969 persons.[1]

Benefieldside, Billingside, Collierly Pontop, Conside and Knitsley, Cornsay, Esk, Ebchester, Greencroft, Healeyfield, Hedleyhope, Iveston, Kyo Laws, Lanchester, Langley, Medomsley, Muggleswick, Satley, Tanfield. To these were added subsequently in 1894-6 Craghead, Knitsley, South Moor, Oxhill, Stanley.
