History[edit | edit source]

The position of Stake Extraction Director (now called Stake Indexing Director) was implemented to facilitate the Universal Data Extraction (UDE) program.  The program was started to extract information from historical records that had been microfilmed. Its purpose was to create a digital database for use in family history research. Records were extracted from microfilm and paper copies of microfilm.  With the advent of the FamilySearch Indexing program volunteers worked directly from computer images to transcribe information. The Universal Data Extraction program was eventually phased out and replaced with the indexing program.
