Brief History[edit | edit source]
The 1st Infantry Regiment, formerly the 1st Florida Infantry Battalion, was assembled in March, 1861, at Chattahoochee Arsenal. Its members were from the counties of Leon, Alachua, Madison, Jefferson, Jackson, Franklin, Gadsden, and Escambia. In December, 1862, it was united with the 3rd Florida Infantry Regiment. Few surrendered on April 26, 1865. The field officers were Colonels J. Patton Anderson and William Miller, Lieutenant Colonels William K. Beard and Thaddeus A. McDonell, and Major Clover A. Ball. [1]
Companies in this Regiment with the Counties of Origin[edit | edit source]
Men often enlisted in a company recruited in the counties where they lived though not always. After many battles, companies might be combined because so many men were killed or wounded. However if you are unsure which company your ancestor was in, try the company recruited in his county first.
