History
- Morazán (in honor of Honduran Liberal General Francisco Morazán) is a municipality in the department of El Progreso in the northeast region of the Republic of Guatemala. Originally it was called «Tocoy Tzima».
- During the Spanish colony the only port on the Atlantic coast near Guatemala was Omoa, in present-day Honduras; to get to the province of Guatemala, small ships were used that brought the products that the province needed, or exported by the Motagua River, which was navigable to Gualán, from where the products were transported in canoes to Tocoy Tzima to be transported finally in yuntas to Guatemala City.
- After the independence of Central America in 1821, Tocoy was assigned to the Acasaguastlán circuit.
- Morazán officially received his current name in 1887.
- Morazán was included in the department of El Progreso when it was created in 1908.
- Although the department of El Progreso was dismantled in 1920, Morazán was reassigned to himself when it was created again in 1934.
- The municipality of Morazán has a population of approximately 12,000 people[1]
