History

  • After the Spanish conquered Guatemala, the country submitted to the Capitulations of Tezulutlan, which was a doctrine in charge of the Dominican friars, until it became necessary for them to deliver their doctrines to the secular clergy in 1754.
  • After the Independence of Central America in 1825 Cobán was established as one of the original municipalities of the State of Guatemala.
  • The Alta Verapaz region is characterized by having lived under two strong colonial processes, the first under the Dominican friars with the favor and support of the Spanish Crown; and the second under the Germans who had concentrated in Verapaz from the second half of the nineteenth century.
  • The municipality of Cobán has a population of approximately 251,000 people.[1]
