Memory Lane - The Family Memories Preservation Center

Memory Lane, the Family Memories Preservation Center, is a place where you can convert audio and visual memories into a digital format. The center is a comfortable space filled with up-to-date tools for anyone to preserve and share family memories and artifacts. The center includes various preservation equipment to digitize photos, slides, videos, 8mm and super 8 film reels, audio tapes, reel to reel tapes, scrapbooks and more. This free resource is offered courtesy of the FamilySearch Library.

  • Reservations are recommended but not required. Those with reservations will be given priority. RESERVATIONS can be made on the FamilySearch Library at FamilySearch Library Services.
  • Memory Lane is open during regular FamilySearch Library HOURS. Learn more about the Library hours here.

Preparing for Your Memory Lane Visit

To prepare for your Memory Lane visit:

  • Please arrive on time. Allow sufficient time to park and walk to the Library. Learn more about downtown parking here.
  • Memory Lane is located on the 2nd floor of the FamilySearch Library. Upon arrival check in and the staff will assist you to your reserved station.
  • If you are more than 15 minutes late to your appointment the equipment may no longer be available.
  • You are required to monitor the equipment during the entirety of your digitizing session. Transferring video and film occurs in real time. Bring a laptop or project to work on while the VHS, audio and film transfers.
  • Expand and review the sections below for the specific type of equipment you have reserved.

By preparing for your visit to Memory Lane, you will maximize your time and preserve more family memories during your ditizing session.

Suggestions for a Successful Digitizing Session

Scan Photos

Bring your photos to scan into digital format. Whether you need a fast photo scanner or large flat bed scanner the FSL can accommodate your needs.
Photo Preparation Tips:

  • Gently clean the photos, front and back.
  • Remove all the dust and sticky debris.
  • Organize your photos before arriving to maximize scanning time.
  • Turn the photos the same direction.
  • Sort by size.
  • Bring a flash drive for capture. 32 - 128 GB is recommended.

Scan Documents

Bring your original documents and certificates to scan into a digital format.
Scanning Preparation Tips:

  • Organize your documents before arriving to maximize scanning time.
  • Sort by size.
  • Bring a flash drive for capture. 32 - 128 GB is recommended.

Scan Books and Journals

Bring your memory books, journals, diaries, scrapbooks and family histories to scan into a digital format.
Scanning Preparation Tips:

  • Organize your materials before arriving.
  • Sort by size.
  • Bring a flash drive for capture. 32 - 128 GB is recommended.

Scan Slides and Negatives

Bring your slides and negatives to scan into a digital format.
Slide Scanning Tips:

  • Clean the slides of all dust and debris.
  • Rotate all slides to landscape orientation.
  • Damaged slides can be captured using a flatbed scanner.
  • Thick plastic slides can be captured using a flatbed scanner.
  • Sort slides by 35mm and by 126mm.
  • Kodak carrousel will work on Memory Lane equipment.


Negative Scanning Tips:

  • Sort negatives with the shinny side forward.


  • Bring a flash drive for capture. 32 - 128 GB is recommended.

Transfer VHS to Digital Conversion

Bring your VHS or VHS-C tapes to convert into digital format.
Video Tape Conversion Tips:

  • Rewind all tapes before arriving for your session. A rewinder is not provided.
  • You are required to remain at the equipment station the entire session. Consider bringing a laptop or other device to work on while the transfer is taking place.

Camcorder Conversion

Bring your Handycam, regular, or mini cassettes to convert into digital format.
Tips for Camcorder Conversion

  • Rewind all tapes before arriving for your appointment. A rewinder is not provided.

Audio Tape Conversion

Audio Tape Conversion Tips:

  • Tapes may be fragile. Convert at your own risk.
