Brief History[edit | edit source]

the 2nd Battalion, Mississippi State Cavalry, also called Harris's, was organized for State service, in the fall of 1863 in Northeast Mississippi. It was later reorganized under the direction of General Gholson and transferred to the Confederate States service May 1, 1864. It was commanded by Major Thomas W. Harris.

  • The 2nd Battalion State Cavalry (Harris’) Internet site has a brief history taken from Dunbar Rowland's Military History of Mississippi, 1803-1898.
  • "Units of the Confederate States Army" by Joseph H. Crute, Jr. contains no history for this unit.

Regiment Companies with the County of Origin[edit | edit source]

Men often enlisted in a company recruited in the counties where they lived though not always. After many battles, companies might be combined because so many men were killed or wounded. However if you are unsure which company your ancestor was in, try the company recruited in his county first.

Company A - Weatherall’s Company (raised in Pontotoc County)
Company B - Wood’s Company (raised in Pontotoc County)
Company C - Moore’s Company (raised in Monroe County) & Rye’s Compay (raised in Pontotoc County)
Carpenter’s Company (no letter designation or county of origin specified)
