Converting HR Articles to RecordSearch Links

Change Historical Records Collection Links found on Historical Records pages to a RecordSearch template Before:

Note: A historical records collection link found on a Historical Records page does not follow the manual of style. Follow the instructions listed exactly.

Part 1[edit | edit source]

Step 1: Sign up[edit | edit source]

1. Go to the Task List and sign up for a Wiki page to fix.

Step 2: Find the First Link[edit | edit source]

1. Click on the link to the Wiki page that you signed up for.

2. Click on Edit source tab at the top of the Wiki page.

3. Do a control + F so you can locate a phase on the page.

4. Copy the code below and search for it on the Wiki page:

familysearch.org/search/collection/


5. If there is no links found on the page, go back to the task list and put the date. You can sign up for another Wiki page.

6. Most likely, there will be several links on the page that inlcude "familysearch.org/search/collection/". Go to the first one on the Wiki page.

7. Copy the following wikitext template:

*{{RecordSearch|NUMBER|NAME OF COLLECTION}}

8. Paste this wikitext directly below the link you found on the page as seen in the example.

9. Now replace the template with information from the link.

A. Copy the Collection ID number. In the example above: 3335352
B. Paste it over NUMBER.
C. Copy the name of the collection from the link. In the example above: Alabama, County Birth Registers, 1881-1930
D. Paste it over NAME OF COLLECTION.
E. Your new link should look like this:

10. Go back to the top of the page to see if there are any more links to be fixed on the page. You may have to do another Control + F.

11. Use the same instructions above to create new links using the RecordSearch template.

12. Once you completed fixing all of the links, you will now click on "Show preview" so you can test the new links.

13. Review the page and click on the new link. It should open in a new tab. Review ALL of the links you created.

14. Fix any problems you find.

15. If all of the links work, REMOVE THE OLD LINKS FROM THE PAGE.

16. Add the statement in the Edit summary box and save the page.

17. Go to the task list and add the date beside your name. You can now sign up for a new Wiki page.
