We'll bring a family history workshop to your organization or family.

Would your family or organization like an introduction to family history? Request a workshop by emailing us at tx_stoneoak@familyhistorymail.org.

We'll bring a team of consultants appropriate for the size of your group to your location, or meet with you virtually online. The following are suggested workshops. You are welcome to request other topics.


Start Your Family Tree

Create a free FamilySearch account and begin your family tree.

Age Group: 11 years and older

Group Size: 1 to 20

Time Needed: 60 minutes

Materials

  • Internet access,
  • Computer or mobile device,
  • Names and birthdates of yourself, parents, and grandparents.

Directions


Participants in this workshop will:
1. Create a FamilySearch account.
2. Begin a family tree with themselves and known information about their parents and grandparents.
3. Use the search features in FamilySearch to identify other ancestors.

Preserve Photos and Documents at FamilySearch

Photos and documents can be archived at FamilySearch

Who is this for: 11 years and older

Group Size: 1 to 20

Time Needed: Depends on numbers of photos

Materials

  • A FamilySearch account
  • Photos and documents
  • Smart phone
  • Internet access

Objectives


Participants in this workshop will:
1. Use their smartphone to digitize photos and documents.
2. Upload photos and documents to FamilySearch.
3. Connect photos and documents to individuals in their family tree.

1. Learn what is available in the Stone Oak Family History Center compared to an online FamilySearch account.

Everyone has a Story: Discovering yours and helping others find theirs

This workshop investigates tools available for discovering your family history. It focuses on ways to connect with family members to their ancestors. It is especially designed to help parents introduce children to their extended family and benefit from a sense of belonging.

Objectives


1. Knowing our cultural background and where we came from can help us develop a strong sense of who we really are.
2. The way we relate to our family stories and create our own narratives about ourselves helps establish our unique, authentic core identity.
3. Human beings desire attachment, belonging, and connection. The relationships we form with other people can be incredibly durable, not only with people in our present, but also with people in our past and future.

Create an Oral History.

Record your history as an audio recording. Archives of oral history will be examined with suggestions of how to contribute to the various archives.
