The Lehi FamilySearch Center is now open to the public.

Dear Parents: For sanitation purposes, our toys and books are temporarily removed from the Children's Area.

Audio and Video Cassette Tape Conversion

The Lehi FamilySearch Center has equipment for you to use to convert audio and video tapes to digital formats. Please click on the "GET STATION INFO - RESERVE" links to the right to learn about each station we have available.

This unit converts audio cassette tapes to a variety of digital formats. This is done in real time -- 30 minutes of audio will take 30 minutes to capture. The digital files are stored directly onto a USB drive. While monitoring the audio with headphones during the session, family history work can be completed on a computer.

Equipment is provided to capture, in real-time, the video from full-size VHS, Compact VHS (VHS-C), 8mm Video Cassette tapes, High 8, and MiniDV. The captured video files will be in .mpg and .mp4 formats and will be transferred to the patron's personal USB drive to take home. A two-hour video will need about 8G of USB storage for the .mpg format and 2G for the .mp4 format. Other video tape formats can also be captured with the patron's video camera/player and the cables to connect to a TV set (RCA cables (yellow, red, white) or S-Video cable). The video tape can be split into smaller topic-based segments during the conversion - birthday party, vacation, graduation, etc. The result is small subject-based videos that can be uploaded to Social Media (Facebook), loaded on a phone, or easily shared with family & friends.

While the digital video files will provide the best option to play and share video memories, a DVD can be created during the conversion if needed. Please bring blank DVD discs (DVD+R or DVD-R types). Recommended brands are Verbatim DVR+R or DVD-R 8x, Maxwell DVD+R 4x/8x/16x or DVD-R 8x/16x, Sony DVD+R 4x/8x/16x, TDK DVD+R 4x/8x/16x.

Preparing to Use the Video Tape Converter

For a successful experience, consider the following:
  • Full-size VHS tapes and compact VHS tapes. Other formats with the patron's camera/player + cable
  • Rewind tapes or set at start point before coming, if possible, to maximize time
  • Expect about two hours of video content during a session with half hour of setup/wrap up
  • Bring an external USB drive with at least 16G or more of available space for a single session. [3.0 USB drive is strongly recommended]
  • MP4 video files will be the result of the conversion. DVD is possible if desired but not typical
  • Plan to complete all efforts within the scheduled time period
  • Do not bring tapes with commercial content or copyrighted material, only family-related videos

The video conversion equipment is to be used only with the assistance of a trained technology missionary.

The video conversion station may be reserved in two-hour-and-fifteen-minute sessions, plus wrap up time. Considering the large number patrons desiring to convert video tapes, patrons may only reserve two sessions per week.
