Project Instructions

Part A: Select a County and Find the County Histories on Missouri Digital Heritage

1. Choose a county on the task list. Put your name in the name column.

2. Go to Missouri Digital Heritage.

3. Click on the Quick Links to the upper right and select county histories.

4. Go to the section at the bottom of the page titled "search by county".

5. Select your county and click "search".

Part B: Review the County History Links to the Wiki

1. Check each county history on Missouri Digital Heritage to make sure it's not already listed on the Wiki page. You will find them under the heading "Local Histories" below "Land and Property Records" and above "Maps and Gazetteers".

2. Add the county histories not already listed on the Wiki page under the heading "Local Histories", using the instructions below the heading "How to Format Entries for Local Histories" to correctly format each entry. Limit the number added to three histories.

3. If the county history is already on the Wiki page, check to see if Missouri Digital Heritage is linked to in the entry. The links will appear after the words "online at".

4. If Missouri Digital Heritage is not linked to it, check the number of links in the entry. If there are less than three, go to "Part D: Adding the Link to Missouri Digital Heritage to an Existing Entry".

5. As you are reviewing these entries, you may find some that need to be reformatted. Go to Part C for guidance on how to reformat and for an example. If you are not confident doing that, please leave a note on the task list in the needs reformatting column.

Part C: How to Format Entries for Local Histories

1.You can go to a sandbox page or directly edit the county page. Because others may be adding other content on county pages, we suggest working in one of your sandbox pages.

2. Refer to the catalog entry for the book and use the following format to enter the information about the book on your sandbox page:

a. Start each entry with a bullet.
b. Title of book in italics
c. Year of publication
d. Add the word “By” and then put the author’s full name, starting with first name
e. Add publication information, using the following: publication location, followed by colon, publisher.
f. Add the words "Online at:" at the end following the publisher.
g. All books should be placed in alphabetical order by title.

  • Biographical and Historical Memoirs of Adams, Clay, Hall and Hamilton Counties, Nebraska. 1890. Chicago, Illinois: Goodspeed Pub. Co. Online at:

3. Add the link after the words "online at:" by copying and pasting the code below: 

[URL Missouri Digital History]

4. Replace "URL" with the URL of the county history.

5. Put "added/updated county history links" in the summary.

6. Click save.

Words of guidance:

  • Capitalize the complete title even though it is not that way in the catalog.
  • If the title is really long, just give the first portion of the title and leave off the rest.
Example: History and resources of Jasper County, Missouri: the direct road to health, happiness and fortune can be changed to History and Resources of Jasper County, Missouri.
  • For missing information, use the following guidelines:
    • Missing author: leave it blank and move on to the publisher information.
    • Missing publication date: use n.d.
    • Missing publication place: use n.p.
    • Missing publisher: use n.p.

Example of no author, no date of publication, no place of publication, and no publisher information:

Niobrara Centennial 1856-1956. N.d. N.p: N.p.

Example for How to Reformat 1. Here is an entry that needs reformatting below.

  • Van Leuven, Audrey. Early times of Atchison County, Missouri : being a collection of items taken mostly from old newspapers of early days in Atchison County, Missouri. Some are historical, some are amusing, all are interesting, 1838-1932. [S.l. : s.n.], 1984.

2. The order of some elements need to be switched and there is no link at the end of this entry. Once reformatted, it looks like this:

Early times of Atchison County, Missouri. 1984 by Audrey Van Leuven. [S.l. : s.n.]. Online at: FamilySearch

Part D: Adding the Link to Missouri Digital Heritage to an Existing Entry

1. Copy and paste the code below, placing the link to Missouri Digital Heritage in alphabetical order in relation to the other links, with any FamilySearch links at the beginning: 

; and at [URL Missouri Digital History]

2. Replace "URL" with the URL of the county history.

3. Put "added/updated county history links" in the summary.
