Historical Background[edit | edit source]

The French settled the island by 1648. The island was traded to Sweden in 1784. Slaves were brought to Saint Barthelemy though slavery ended in 1847. In 1878, Sweden returned the island to France, who administered it as part of Guadeloupe.[1]
