Description

The languages in Angola are those originally spoken by the different ethnic groups and Portuguese, introduced during the Portuguese colonial era. The most widely spoken indigenous languages are Umbundu, Kimbundu and Kikongo. Portuguese is the official language of the country. [1]

  • Portuguese -- 71.1% (spoken by most as a primary or secondary language)
  • Umbundu -- 23.0% (spoken in the center-west of the country and also spoken in Luanda)
  • Kikongo -- 8.8% (spoken in Angola and surrounding countries)
  • Kimundu -- 7.85 (spoken in the north-west of the country)
